To situate thestudies, I will begin with a short summary of the research on language development in L2 writing based on a review article (Polio & Park, in press). I will highlight the various approaches that researchers have taken and discuss some of the methodological challenges. This view has been substantiated by four meta-analyses of primary studies that together provide strong empirical support for its overall effectiveness. Even though the provision of corrective feedback has consistently proven more effective than its absence, there are still many variables that interact to moderate its effectiveness.
