 Japanese Society for Language Sciences 12th Annual International Conference (JSLS2010) Call for Papers

The Japanese Society for Language Sciences (JSLS) invites proposals for our Twelfth Annual International Conference, JSLS2010. JSLS2010 will be held at the University of Electro-Communications (UEC, Denki Tsushin Daigaku), in Tokyo. UEC is conveniently located a 5 to 10 minute walk from Chofu Station, which is 15 minutes by train (Keio Line) from Shinjuku Station, one of the major train stations in Tokyo. We welcome proposals for two types of presentations: (1) papers (oral presentations), and (2) posters. Professor Jack Bilmes of the University of Hawai'i will deliver a plenary lecture, Occasioned Semantics: Meaning in Verbal Interaction (Abstract available here). Professor Yuji Matsumoto of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology University will deliver a plenary in Japanese on natural language processing. JSLS is a bilingual conference and papers and posters may be presented in either English or Japanese. Submissions are invited in any area related to language sciences.

Conference Dates:

June 26 (Saturday) - 27 (Sunday), 2010

Location:

University of Electro-Communications, approximately 25 minutes from Shinjuku Station by train and on foot.

Submissions:

The Japanese Society for Language Sciences aims "to stimulate research in the language sciences based on natural language data, in areas such as language acquisition, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, and to support the development of the language sciences through exchange between researchers" (Article 2, JSLS Regulations). The scope of this endeavor covers a wide area, including linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics), first language acquisition, second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, language production, mother tongue education, foreign language instruction, natural language processing, brain science, bilingualism, sociolinguistics, discourse research, and linguistic philosophy, among others. This society hopes that researchers working on these widely diverse topic reach beyond their own areas of specialization by supporting the active exchange of opinions and ideas between researchers working in related fields.

Qualifications for Presenters

All presenters should be members of JSLS by June 1st, 2010. (It is not necessary for co-presenters to be members, but they must be registered for the conference if they plan to attend.) Please refer to the following website for membership information:

Papers published or presented elsewhere should not be submitted and will not be accepted. Each author is only allowed to submit one proposal as the first author. Each paper presentation will be 25 minutes in length (20 minutes for presentation, followed by a 5-minute question & answer period). The presentation of posters will be 90 minutes. The language of presentation can be either Japanese or English.

Title and Abstract

Please send the abstract in a file attachment. (Please do not include any information in your abstract which may reveal your identity, as the review process will be conducted anonymously.)

Format

   1. paper: maximum 2 pages A4 or letter-size paper (including title, tables, figures, & references)
   2. poster: 1 page A4 or letter-size paper (including title, tables, figures, & references)
2. Paper size: A4 or letter-size
3. Margins:
   1. In the case of A4, Top and Bottom: 30mm, Left and Right: 25mm
   2. In the case of letter-size, all margins: 1 inch
4. Font: Times New Roman (or a similar font)
5. Font size: 12 point for text, 10 point for references/ footnotes
6. Length of abstract and line spacing: single-space, 1000 words maximum

Save the file as a "pdf file", "text file", or “MSWord” file.

2.Save your file under your own name (e.g., brown-roger.pdf).

Each abstract will be reviewed anonymously by several reviewers. Notification of acceptance will be made by the end of March. (Please note that some "paper" proposals might be accepted as "poster" presentations.)

If your proposal is accepted, you will be requested to send a copy of your paper (maximum length for papers is 4 pages, for posters 1 page on A4/letter size paper) by May 22(Saturday), 2010. This paper will appear in the Conference Handbook. We plan to publish outstanding oral presentations as a collection of papers titled "Studies in Language Sciences".

NOTE

We will issue an acceptance letter if your paper is accepted. However, we are unable to issue any kind of invitation letter.
